Joppineez is a tool which lets you organize your image folders. It is written in Java, and makes use of an embedded web server (which is open source) called Jetty. Users must first launch the Joppineez web launcher and then point their web browsers to http://localhost:6996/. All image files are stored on the user's local hard drive.

Business Model

Joppineez has a freemium business model. Joppineez 1.0 is completely free. Joppineez 2.0 supports image sharing. Users who wish to share their images with other Joppineez users must pay a subscription fee of $10/year. Users who wish to access the images of Joppineez subscribers need not be subscribers themselves.

Folders Mode

Displays parent folder name followed by an indented list of folder names. Current folder is highlighted (delimited with square brackets). Whenever the parent folder is a node folder, the folder list contains 4 items: numbered, named, people, and nodes.

Tiles Mode

Whenever the user is in Folders Mode and presses Enter when an image folder is highlighted, the current mode becomes Tiles Mode. The display is divided into 3 rows of equal height. Each row contains images. All portrait-mode images are of equal height but of varying widths. Every landscape-mode image is the same width as the height of the row which contains that image. All images are separated by a white, one-pixel gap. The gaps surrounding the current image are colored red. Clicking on an image will display it in Image Mode.

Image Mode

Single image is displayed, expanded by the maximum amount available on the user's display. Pressing Enter enables the user to view/edit image details: description, tag list, people list, comments. Pressing K in image mode or tiles mode toggles first line of image descriptions on/off. Comments are only supported in Joppineez 2.0.

Slide Mode

Press H followed by Left Arrow to toggle between Tiles Mode and Slide Mode. Slide Mode displays between 1 and 3 images per slide. Each slide tries to fill the entire display. A slide containing a single image behaves in a similar fashion to image mode. Click on an image in slide mode to enter image mode, then press D to delete the image from the slide. In slide mode, press I to insert an image. The next time the I command is used in image mode, the image is inserted into the slide. Various image arrangements (side-by-side, stacked, or some combination) are used automatically, depending on the aspect ratios of the images on the slide.

Image Folder Names

  • numbered - numbers: 1, 2, 3, ...
  • named - arbitrary string
  • people - up to 4 names: all lower-case, surname preceded with underscore (unless at beginning of folder name), other names separated with hyphens as needed

Miscellaneous

  • Menu and Help: Menu bar is a narrow column of 24 commands appearing on the left side of the display. The help screen displays those commands, along with a description of each command.
  • Tag Hierarchy: Every image inherits tags from the image folder. Every folder inherits tags from the parent folder. In Folders Mode, pressing T invokes the tag-editor.
  • Modifying the File System: The only allowable file system changes are inserting or deleting an image file. All other changes to the file system must be accomplished using Joppineez commands only.
  • Folder Name Ordering: The user has the option of displaying folder names in alphabetical order, case-insensitive. By default folder names are displayed in the same order in which the user wishes to display them. The ordering can be modified using Shift+Up/Down Arrow, as well as cut and paste.
  • Image Sharing: Joppineez 2.0 will support image sharing using Google Drive. Users can share any folder with all followers, a list of Joppineez users, or everyone. All image meta-data is searchable by other Joppineez users, who can also add comments to those images.

About Me

I am Mike Hahn, the founder of Joppineez.com. I was previously employed at Brooklyn Computer Systems as a Delphi Programmer and a Technical Writer (I worked there between 1996 and 2013). At the end of 2014 I quit my job as a volunteer tutor at Fred Victor on Tuesday afternoons, where for 5 years I taught math, computers, and literacy. I'm now a volunteer math/computer tutor at West Neighbourhood House. My hobbies are reading quora.com questions/answers and the news at cbc.ca. About twice a year I get together with my sister Cathy who lives in Victoria. She comes here or I go out there usually in the summer. Prior to starting my Jovelyst project I used to lie on the couch a lot, not being very active. Now I'm busy most of the time. I visit my brother Dave once a month or so and I also visit my friends Main and Steph once or twice a month.
